M&IT charity auction raises £29k for Meeting Needs

Generous bidders have helped to raise more than £29,000 in the M&IT online auction for MIMA 2014.

More than 2,000 bids came in for 105 lots, which included luxury stays in hotels across the world, champagne afternoon tea experiences and VIP sporting packages, all in aid of the industry’s own charity Meetings Industry Meeting Needs (MIMN).

Bidding ended with a flurry of activity in the final minutes. Among the most sought-after lots was a two night stay for two people in Prestige accommodation at the hotel Le Bristol, Paris. Bids reached £1,646 and the eventual winner was Graham Brett of Brett Howell Associates.

Also leading the way was Justin Heron of EJ Heron Ltd, who offered £715 for a three night stay for two in an Ocean Deluxe room at the Mina A’Salaam Hotel in Dubai.

Garry Watson of IRRV got a great deal, picking up a weekend trip to Bergen in Norway, including return flights with SAS, two nights at a Nordic Choice Hotel and a Bergen Guest of Honor card entitling him to free travel on all public transport and free admission to museums, for just £620.

And Penny Lewis of Grass Roots Meetings and Events snapped up a bargain, paying just £65 for a champagne afternoon tea for two in the Podium Restaurant at the London Hilton on Park Lane.

All funds raised from the auction will go to MIMN, the event industry’s own charity, which raises funds for worthy causes in the UK and abroad. Projects supported in 2014 have included the Free Hands youth project in Cyprus, the Shujuru Foundation in Tanzania providing secondary education in the form of an agricultural microloan, and SpecialEffect in the UK, which supplies equipment such as eye-control computers for those who have lost the use of their limbs.
